Cheshire High School Baseball Tune-Up

December 1, 2008 by Greg Lederer

Fifteen players from the Cheshire High School baseball team recently completed a tune-up for the upcoming spring season. The local group used teamwork to outlast 42 teams for the Greater New Haven Fall Baseball League 18-U Championship on Nov. 2.
“It was impressive to see the group come together,” said Head Coach Bill Robertson, who was assisted by Tom Pinkham. “We finished with an 18-2 record. That indicates the dedication that these players put in.”
Pitching depth was critical to their sweep of three playoff games from Nov. 1-2.
Senior pitcher Kevin Jefferis opened with a 10-2 victory over West Haven at Bartlem Park). Cheshire traveled to Meriden one day later with seniors Eric Ostroski (10-5; Groton), and Steve Howard (4-1; Meriden) firing two more complete games. The title game saw Cheshire score all their offense in the seventh inning, breaking open a scoreless stalemate with Meriden at Ceppa Field.
“Steve (Howard) had a five-hitter after only pitching seven innings heading into the game,” said Robertson.
Cheshire compiled 14 hits each against West Haven and Groton. Smacking five hits each with Ostroski, senior Dave Tammaro and Jefferis compiled three doubles apiece during the playoffs. Senior Brad Runowicz added four hits and a team-best four RBIs.
