Girls’ Lacrosse Teams Come To Cheshire For ‘Ram Jam’

June 14, 2009 by Greg Lederer

Lacrosse is among the fastest growing sports nationally with players picking up the stick at younger ages. You need to look no further than this weekend to see its impact among local girls.
The Cheshire Girls’ Lacrosse Club will host the Second Annual ‘Ram Jam’ today from Bartlem Recreation Area. Thirty-two youth teams from 13 towns will participate across five fields. Organizers are excited about growing from 23 teams last year.
“It speaks a lot to how the jamboree went last year. It was well received,” said Cheshire Girls’ Lacrosse President Rob Hoynes. “It’s a credit to everybody involved and the word has spread to other towns. This event is how we close the year.”
Teams are spread across the Senior (13; seventh and eighth grade), Junior (11; fifth and sixth grade), and Bantam (eight; third and fourth grade) divisions. Games will be slotted into half-hour time slots, providing lacrosse action from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
“It’s been tremendous. Margaret Coombs has done a fabulous job organizing it,” said Hoynes, who coaches the Cheshire Senior Red team. “It’s great to see so many teams coming to Cheshire.”
The event offers more than just games. DJ Doug Brown will provide music during dance breaks for each division, while players also look forward to finding the best stick skills in the Sure Shot Competition.
“All the games stop for 20 minutes, so the girls can dance together. It’s fun to watch,” said Hoynes. “The Sure Shot Competition is a contest to see who can shoot the fastest in the divisions.”
