Local Events Saturday, Aug. 30 On Saturday Aug. 30, the Cheshire Police Department will conduct its second motor vehicle checkpoint on various state routes in Cheshire. Vehicles will be briefly detained according to a set plan. Officers will interview operators to detect signs of alcohol use and to determine whether vehicle occupants are properly belted or restrained. Inconvenience to motorists should be minimal.
Sunday, Aug. 31 Cheshire Junior Football will kick off the 2008 season with four home games on Aug. 31. The Senior A (11 a.m.), Junior B (1 p.m.), Junior A (3 p.m.), and Youth A (5 p.m.) will be hosting Shoreline Youth Football Conference rivals at the David B. Maclary Complex at Cheshire High School. The program has seven football teams this fall and for the first time, Cheshire cheerleaders will be divided among three squads.
Wednesday, Sept. 3 The Cheshire Junior Women’s Club will host its 2nd Annual “September Slam” a women’s doubles tennis tournament on Wednesday, Sept. 3 at the Cheshire High School Tennis Courts. The tournament will begin at 9 a.m. The rain date will be Thursday, Sept. 4. The proceeds from this tournament will benefit the Cheshire Junior Women’s Club scholarship and general funds, which in turn will go back into the community. To register for “September Slam” pick up a registration form at the Park and Recreation building or contact Kerry Brown at 271-1739 with any questions.
